Huanglong Cave

Huanglong Cave takes Wulingyuan's scenery underground. Across chambers at different levels, stalagmites rise from the floor, stalactites hang from the ceiling and stone columns link the two. Lighting traces their layered shapes, bringing the subtler textures of the rock into view.

The Xiangshui River runs underground through the cave, offering a different perspective from the walking route. Close to the water, the ceiling and walls seem to gain depth. In the broader chambers, look back at the spacing and shapes of the stalagmites to appreciate how the cave's spaces change.

Start with a detail or two: the slender outline of Dinghai Shenzhen, a named stalagmite, and the clusters of formations around it. Comparing the shapes they suggest with their actual rock textures can be more rewarding than remembering names, and gives a mountain itinerary a change of pace.
