Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Guide
Last updated: · By Zhangjiajie Beyond
Quick Answer
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the main starting point for Wulingyuan's celebrated sandstone pillar scenery. We suggest two full days for a first visit: an upper-viewpoint route around Yuanjiajie and Tianzi, then a contrasting valley or selected scenic area. Pick your hotel and park entrance together, confirm separate transport inclusions, and allow for walking and queues. Scenic lifts and cableways do not mean every route is step-free.

Detailed guide
Understand the landscape and the names on the map
Wulingyuan is known for its quartz sandstone pillars, with forest and valleys providing views from above and below. UNESCO recognises the wider scenic and historic interest area. For planning, use the actual scenic area, entrance and route name rather than assuming every place labelled 'Zhangjiajie' lies within your ticket.
Yuanjiajie and Tianzi are useful upper-viewpoint choices for a first route; Golden Whip Stream changes the experience to a valley walk. Yangjiajie and Huangshi are additional choices, not obligations to squeeze into that same day. Tianzi Mountain is not Tianmen Mountain.
Choose your entrance before your hotel
The Wulingyuan scenic area has multiple entrances, so 'near the park' is not enough information for a hotel choice. The official entrance guide distinguishes the Wulingyuan landmark entrance, the Forest Park entrance and other approaches including Tianzi, Zimugang and Yangjiajie. Use current maps and operating information to select the entrance that serves your route.
Connect four decisions: where you enter, how you ascend if needed, the walking section, and where you exit. The same scenic destination can create very different days when approached from a different gate. If a driver collects you, agree on the exact exit rather than only the name of the park.
- Save the entrance's Chinese name alongside your hotel's full address.
- Check whether the day's end point is the same as the start point.
- Keep bags outside the sightseeing route unless a confirmed storage arrangement says otherwise.
Build two contrasting days, not one long checklist
For a first upper-area day, compare a Yuanjiajie and Tianzi route with the available ascent and return transport. Keep time to stop at viewpoints. Queues and inter-area movement are part of the day, even when a map makes the main sights look close together.
For the second day, choose a defined Golden Whip Stream section or another scenic area that genuinely interests you. Agree on a walking limit and an exit. A stream's published length is not a personal walking prescription; do not confuse the watercourse, a trail and the complete entrance-to-exit journey.
Check admission, physical demands and protected-area rules
Ask which admission, scenic buses, elevator, cableways or other transport are included in the actual product. Confirm booking documents, entry validity and any re-entry conditions with the operator or supplier. This guide does not establish a current price, guarantee availability or certify a ticket for a particular traveller.
Mechanical transport assists with parts of the terrain, but walking paths can still contain steps and slopes. Obtain a route-specific access assessment if needed. Stay on permitted paths, carry litter out, keep food secure and do not feed wildlife. Check current notices before using a trail found in an old blog or hiking map.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a hotel described only as 'near Zhangjiajie National Forest Park' without identifying its useful entrance.
- Adding every scenic area to one day because cableways and an elevator exist.
- Confusing Golden Whip Stream's published length with the walking distance of a chosen route.
- Assuming scenic transport, re-entry or passport booking terms from a different ticket product.
Local tips
- Match your return transport to the exit actually used by your route.
- Combine a top-down view and a valley-level view if time and walking ability allow.
- Tell a planner your walking limits and comfort with heights, not merely that you want an 'easy tour'.
FAQ
How long should I spend in the Forest Park?
We recommend two full days for a first visit, allowing an upper-viewpoint route and a contrasting valley or selected area. One focused day is possible, but it will not cover the entire scenic area.
Is Tianmen Mountain included in the Forest Park?
No. Tianmen is a separate city-side mountain with its own operating route and admission arrangement. Tianzi Mountain, whose name is similar, is in the Wulingyuan scenic area.
What itinerary combines the park with Tianmen?
Our three-full-day concept uses two consecutive Forest Park days and a separate Tianmen day. Arrival, departure, hotel transfers and ticket availability need to be added and verified around the concept.
Can children or visitors needing shorter walks enjoy the park?
A shorter route with selected viewpoints may be appropriate, but actual steps, queues and exit options must be checked. Do not infer universal accessibility from the existence of scenic lifts or buses.
